Cabinet Doors Won't Close or Align? Hinge Repair & Adjustment Guide

Misaligned cabinet doors are almost always a hinge adjustment, not a replacement. Here's how to dial in perfect alignment in 5 minutes.

    CabinetsApril 26, 2026

Cabinet doors that won't close, hang crooked, or rub against neighbors are one of the most visible — and most easily fixed — problems in any kitchen. The cause is almost never broken hardware. It's a hinge that has loosened or shifted by a millimeter or two, throwing off the alignment that originally made the doors look perfect on installation day.

This guide teaches you how to diagnose and adjust modern Euro-style hinges (the type in 95% of cabinets built since 1990), as well as how to deal with traditional butt hinges and overlay hinges. Most fixes take under 5 minutes per door with a single Phillips screwdriver.

    Identify Your Hinge Type

    European/Euro Hinges (Most Common)

These are concealed cup hinges with a round 'cup' inserted into a 35mm hole on the back of the door. They mount to a metal baseplate inside the cabinet. You'll see two visible adjustment screws on the hinge body when the door is open.

    Wrap-Around / Surface Hinges

Older or budget cabinets use visible hinges that wrap around the cabinet edge. Limited adjustment — usually only by re-drilling screw holes.

    Butt Hinges

Traditional inset-door cabinets (Shaker style, custom millwork) use simple butt hinges. Adjustment via shimming or moving screw positions.

    How Euro Hinge Adjustments Work

Every Euro hinge has THREE adjustments, controlled by THREE screws:

    • Side-to-side (left/right) — the screw closest to the door
    • Up-and-down (in/out) — the screw closest to the cabinet (loosen, slide door, retighten)
    • Depth (in/out from face) — the middle or rear screw

Brand variations exist (Blum, Salice, Grass, Hettich), but the principle is universal. Some newer hinges have a 4th 'soft-close' adjustment for closing speed.

Common Problems and the Right Fix

    Door Hangs Lower Than Neighbor

Loosen the up/down screws on both hinges (one full turn). Lift the door to align with the neighbor. Tighten the screws.

Door Slants (Top Closer to Cabinet Than Bottom or Vice Versa)

Adjust the side-to-side screw on ONE hinge only — the top hinge to swing the top, the bottom hinge to swing the bottom. Half-turn at a time.

Door Sticks Out From Cabinet Face

Tighten the depth screw on both hinges, or back it off to push the door out. Match top and bottom by equal amounts.

    Door Won't Latch / Won't Close Fully

Two possible causes: the hinge depth needs adjustment (door too far in), or the hinge spring/cam mechanism is failing. Try depth adjustment first; if doesn't work, replace the hinge ($4–$8).

    Door Falls Off When Opened

Stripped screw holes in the cabinet wall. Remove the screws, plug the holes with toothpicks and wood glue, let dry, re-drive screws. Or step up to longer/thicker screws.

    Door Squeaks When Opening

Spray a tiny amount of dry silicone lubricant (NOT WD-40) into the hinge pivot points.

    Step-by-Step: Re-Aligning a Whole Bank of Cabinets

If multiple doors are misaligned (common after years of slamming or after settling in older homes throughout Berkeley and Oakland), align them in order:

    1. Identify the door whose alignment you'll match (typically a corner or end door)
    2. Adjust each subsequent door to match the previous one's reveal (gap)
    3. Use a folded sheet of paper as a feeler gauge — the gap should equal one paper thickness
    4. Adjust side-to-side first, then height, then depth
    5. Move down the row, never adjusting two doors against each other simultaneously

    Repairing Stripped Screw Holes

The #1 cause of doors falling off is screw holes that have stripped after years of door movement. The fix is permanent and takes 5 minutes:

    1. Remove the hinge
    2. Coat 2–3 wooden toothpicks with wood glue (Titebond II or III)
    3. Insert into the stripped hole, snap off flush
    4. Let dry 30 minutes
    5. Re-drive the original screw — it now bites into fresh wood

    When to Replace Hinges Entirely

    • Visible cracking in the metal arm
    • Cup has pulled out of the door
    • Spring no longer holds the door closed (constantly drifts open)
    • Soft-close feature has failed and door slams

Modern Blum or Salice replacement hinges run $4–$10 each at any home center. Always replace BOTH hinges on a door at the same time, even if only one is bad — uneven hardware causes new alignment problems.

    Adjusting Soft-Close Hinges

Modern Blum Blumotion and similar soft-close hinges have a small slider on the back of the hinge body — usually marked with a turtle and rabbit icon. Slide toward the rabbit for faster close, toward the turtle for slower. If the door slams or doesn't fully close, this is your adjustment.

    DIY vs. Professional

DIY: every hinge adjustment, screw hole repair, hinge replacement. Call a pro for: full cabinet realignment after settling, hinges that have damaged the door (cup pulled through), refinishing or repainting damaged areas, custom inset cabinet work.

    Tools You Need

    • #2 Phillips screwdriver (most adjustments)
    • Wood toothpicks and wood glue (for stripped holes)
    • Dry silicone lubricant
    • Replacement hinges if needed (bring an old one to the store to match)

    Prevention

    • Don't let kids hang from cabinet doors
    • Don't slam doors — install soft-close adapters if needed ($3 each)
    • Re-tighten visible hinge screws annually
    • Check alignment seasonally — small adjustments prevent big problems

    FAQs

Why won't my cabinet doors close anymore?

Usually a depth adjustment is needed, or a spring inside the hinge has weakened.

    Can I mix hinge brands?

Avoid it — close speeds and adjustment ranges differ. Replace as a pair.

Why are my new cabinets already misaligned?

Settling, transport, or installer haste. Adjust per this guide — hardware is fine.

How do I add soft-close to existing hinges?

Buy clip-on soft-close adapters ($3 each) or replace the entire hinge with a soft-close version.

What if the hinge cup hole is damaged?

Use a 35mm hole repair kit, or have a cabinet shop repair the door — much cheaper than replacement.
